I want to share an insightful and essential academic work that sheds light on a pivotal part of our history. Helena Hanhikangas’ Master’s Thesis, Korean Politics vs. Taekwon-Do in 1966-2002: The Organisational History of The International Taekwon-Do Federation in the Context of Korean Political Division, and How to Protect Your Institution Against Political Appropriation, is a deep dive into the intersection of martial arts and geopolitical tensions.
This thesis is more than a historical recount; it is a guide on how institutions like ours can withstand external political pressures. Hanhikangas explores how the ITF, founded by General Choi Hong Hi, navigated the turbulent waters of Korean political division. The study highlights the challenges the ITF faced, including attempts by North Korea to bring the federation under its control, leading to its eventual splintering into three factions in 2002.
What makes this work so valuable is its focus on resilience. Despite intense political interference, the ITF’s core remained committed to its identity as a nongovernmental martial arts institution. This story is a testament to the power of unity and the importance of safeguarding our principles against external pressures.
For all Taekwon-Do practitioners and enthusiasts, this thesis offers critical insights into the complex relationship between martial arts and politics. It also serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving the integrity of our institutions.
I encourage everyone to read this comprehensive study. It not only honors our history but also equips us with knowledge to protect the future of Taekwon-Do from political appropriation.
Stay strong and united,
