NTN Summer Camp 2024
About 400 ITF adult athletes gather every year in the small village of Surnadal in Norway. Under the supervision of GM Andresen, 9th Degree, and the various Masters and Sabums of NTN, there is a week of Taekwon-Do training and social activities from early morning until late hours. The first week of August, the village is packed with white doboks everywhere you turn.
Actually, there are several NTN camps during the summer: Kids camp, juvenile camp, adult camp, and new this summer was the +60 camp. I guess, in total during the summer, there are about 1500 people training ITF Taekwon-Do in Surnadal. But the upcoming camp in week 31 is the adult camp.
Traditional patterns all the way from Chong Ji to Tong Il will be coverd. There will be free sparring for both novices and the highest international level. The special technique and power enthusiasts will have their own dedicated evenings with Sabum Robert Skagseth. To ensure the free sparring is up to date, GM Willy Van der Mortel will keep a watchful eye on them. Sabum Andreas Jenstad, also known as the world’s most winning pattern coach in modern ITF, will be there. Along with the rest of the NTN national team coaches.
Most of the participants are usually black belts. There are mainly Norwegians at the camp, but we have had visitors from all over the world. You can say that the ITF Radix project, as a name and concept, was born at this camp. Master Robert Boer was allways a fishing enthusiast, and had been visiting Norway for years. But suddenly he discoverd this huge ITF Taekwon-Do camp that was almost like a sicret that only Norwegians knew about.
He attended one of my self defence sessions. I've always pick techniques from the patterns for the selfdefense, he really liked the approach and wanted to cooperate on a project. I'm always down for Martial Art projects, so then Robert had the idea for a name: ITF Radix.
The NTN Summer Camp is a big deal for me. I have been there every year since 1994. It is a family tradition to go there and our kids had their summer there since they were born.
I will recommend to check it out and plan for a visit one year. You will not regret it!
