What is NTN Instructor Course 6?
As a lifelong practitioner of Taekwon-Do, I’ve always been fascinated by the depth and practicality of our art. Taekwon-Do is more than patterns, sparring, or breaking; at its core, it’s a martial art built on the foundation of self-defense. With this in mind, NTN Instructor Course 6was developed to help instructors deliver high-quality, realistic, and practical self-defense training.
This course represents the sixth level in National Taekwon-Do Norway’s (NTN) instructor program and focuses on equipping instructors with the tools and knowledge to teach self-defense in a way that is both effective and engaging. It is a critical stepping stone for instructors who wish to deepen their understanding of Taekwon-Do as a self-defense system and play a key role in the development of their students.
Why We Created This Course
Self-defense is one of the most important aspects of Taekwon-Do. Over the years, I’ve noticed that many instructors and students view self-defense as a secondary focus compared to other elements of our training. However, self-defense is the essence of Taekwon-Do – it’s why General Choi created this art in the first place.
To bridge this gap, I developed NTN Instructor Course 6 in collaboration with NTN admin. The aim was to provide a comprehensive course that focuses on the practical application of Taekwon-Do techniques in real-world scenarios. This course incorporates everything I’ve learned from decades of teaching and practicing self-defense, ensuring it meets the needs of today’s instructors and students.
What Participants Will Learn
NTN Instructor Course 6 is designed to prepare instructors for real-world self-defense challenges while maintaining the principles and values of Taekwon-Do.
Key Focus Areas:
1. Self-Defense Techniques: Instructors learn effective and practical techniques based on Taekwon-Do principles. These techniques include defenses against grabs, strikes, and even weapon attacks.
2. Situational Awareness: Participants are taught to identify and assess threats, adapting techniques to different scenarios.
3. Teaching Methodology: The course emphasizes how to teach self-defense to teens and adults in a structured and engaging manner.
4. Safety and Ethics: One of my priorities is ensuring that self-defense is taught responsibly, with respect for the physical and emotional safety of students.
The course also combines theoretical knowledge with hands-on practice. Participants explore the principles of self-defense, learn how to integrate it into their regular training, and practice drills designed to improve both technique and confidence.
Why This Course Is Important for Instructors
For instructors, NTN Instructor Course 6 is more than just a prerequisite for 3rd Dan grading. It’s an opportunity to gain deeper insight into Taekwon-Do’s self-defense applications and to pass this knowledge on to students in a meaningful way.
Self-defense is what gives Taekwon-Do its identity as a martial art. Without it, we risk losing the practical side of what we do. By completing this course, instructors are better prepared to inspire their students, helping them build confidence, skills, and an understanding of how to protect themselves in real-world situations.
Nationwide Accessibility
One of the strengths of this course is its accessibility. I’m proud that the NTN Instructor Course 6 is offered in locations all over Norway. From Kirkenes, Tromsø, Bodø, Trondheim, Surnadal, Molde, Ålesund, Åndalsnes, Bergen, Fana, Stavanger, Oslo, Bærum and Arendal, we’ve worked hard to ensure that instructors from all regions have the opportunity to attend.
The next course will be held in Porsgrunn on March 15-16, 2025, and I’m excited to welcome instructors to this event.
